2019 Parquet Trends: A balance between new tradition and redescovering of antique woods

Combining tradition with innovation in large formats and neutral colours: here are the latest trends in parquets for the home and office.

22.02.2019

On entering a room somewhere, we’ve almost all set foot on an old, creaking wooden floor.

In old offices or houses in any number of historic towns, old manors or other lived-in ambiences, most of us have experienced this basic but familiar feeling.

The creaking of the wooden boards is usually associated with the quality of the flooring installation, the choice of wood and ingenuity of the artisans, using simple or more complex patterns designed to withstand the test of time.

Contemporary parquet flooring trends contemplate new horizons, while consolidating time-tested workmanship.

What are the latest trends in 2019?

What do designers propose nowadays?

The latest trends favour the larger formats. Increased lengths and widths are now also feasible, thanks to the introduction of new production technologies.

Normally associated with the high-end of the market, large-format wooden floors are available across a relatively wide price range, thus also catering to more contained budgets.

When it comes to the choice of colours and essences, 2019 has seen a continuing trend towards intermediate shades and matt surfaces – thanks to the preference for large-formats. Homogenous wooden floorings create an almost uninterrupted flowing effect, without distinguishing the individual boards.

Whether in oak, larch or elm, oil and varnish surface treatments range in colour from white to sand, pearl grey to anthracite, blending in with the walls and furnishings.

These remain the predominant trends in 2019.

Upcoming trends

New technologies, formats, essences and surface treatments help to preserve wood more effectively, thus fuelling the trend towards all-wooden designer homes!

This applies indoors and includes bathrooms, living rooms, bedrooms and kitchens, as well as outdoors.

Wood furnishings in each room are no longer the exception!

Properly treated exotic and robust essences are durable and resistant to both humidity and atmospheric agents.

Our homes are increasingly becoming a single open ambience in which we move about barefoot, on Alpine woods as easily as on exotic woods sourced from tropical rainforests.

Sustainability: the real 2019 trend in parquets

La sostenibilità secondo Parkemo

Sustainability is the watchword.

As a natural material, wood is considered a sustainable resource. But only to the extent that it originates from cultivated forests where supply chains guarantee a planned drawdown and corresponding regrowth of the forest.
And then there are the innovations in surface treatments, in both oiled and varnished finishes.
Technology has made great strides in these areas too. Thanks to the growing awareness of end-users, the market offers environmentally-low (or very low) impact products, without negatively affecting our health and well-being.

This are the trends in 2018.

And what does the future hold in store?

At Parkemo we not only try to keep up with trends, but we also like to set new ones, inspiring designers and planners or drawing inspiration from their ideas.

We believe that in future the trend will be towards more varied formats, experimenting with shapes and designs. Clearer nuances and more neutral treatments. In short, wooden floorings will continue to subtly reward us; gently creaking as we consciously tread across history.
